Aortic Valve Stenosis Defined
Aortic valve stenosis is a heart valve disease. It is the most common valve disease in the United States. It involves the narrowing of the aortic heart valve, which connects the left ventricle to the aorta. Narrowing results in a reduction of the volume of blood pumped to the body. It may also cause blood to back up into the lungs.
The Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by way of an echocardiogram reading (ultrasound of the heart) combined with physical symptoms. A stress test and lab work may also be needed.
The Symptoms
Aortic valve stenosis presents in three symptoms.
- Loss of consciousness due to reduced blood flow to the brain
- Angina (heart pains) due to reduced blood flow to the heart
- Shortness of breath with exertion (congestive heart failure)
Treatment Options
Once diagnosed with Aortic valve stenosis, the physicians at Tampa Cardiovascular Associates will discuss with you the different modalities available. In most patients, once symptoms are present, the replacement of this valve is recommended.
Valve Replacement
The repair can be accomplished in two ways. Surgically or in a minimally invasive procedure.
The physicians at Tampa Cardiovascular Associates perform the minimally invasive methods of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation(TAVI), which have gained traction over the past few years due to their less invasive nature. Our doctors will evaluate you thoroughly to determine if you are a candidate.
