Most of us have heard about the myriad of health issues that stress can cause to the human body such as obesity, mental health issues, and even heart disease. Stress is bad news and in today’s fast-paced, action-packed world, it is impossible to avoid. This doesn’t mean that we are doomed to have weak hearts and reduced quality of life as a result of the fast pace of the modern world, though without a bit of conscious effort, this can easily be the result.

Heart disease is one of the more common diseases in the western world and is responsible for untold deaths each and every year. While there are tons of different ways that stress can affect you, and tons of ways that we can counter it, heart health is one of the scarier areas in which stress can have a negative effect. Being exposed to long-term, excessive levels of stress can increase your risk for the development of heart disease and also increase your risk of heart attack.

Outside of all the other issues that stress can cause, the risk of heart attack, heart disease, and stroke, are one of the more severe and really underscore the need for a variety of stress reduction techniques. We cannot avoid stress, but we can avoid unnecessary stress and find healthy ways to manage the stress that we have no choice but to endure.

Mindfulness is an increasingly popular way to help cope with the unique stresses of the modern world. In essence, mindfulness is the ability to live in the moment. Meditation is a perfect example of a highly effective mindfulness technique. This is a lot easier said than done and anyone who regularly meditates will tell you that it takes dedication and practice. Many people recommend focusing on some very inane detail, such as the intake and exhalation of breath in a very direct way so that this is all you are thinking about. Eventually, that goal is to completely clear your mind and simply observe and be in the moment, in the present. It is a simple, but a highly effective technique to reduce stress.

Mindfulness is by no means the only technique that is effective for stress reduction. It is one that is gaining in popularity due to its effectiveness as well as the fact that all it takes to perfect is a bit of time and effort. The ability to stay in the moment and focus all your attention on just being takes you away from the stresses of everyday life and promotes lower blood pressure too. These calming activities are a great way to combat high levels of unavoidable stress.
