Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious condition concerning the narrowing of the arteries leading to your extremities (peripheral areas of the body). Most of the time PAD affects the legs, but it can also affect the arms, head, and stomach.

PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, a blocking of the arteries to major areas of the body. This disease is a build-up of plaque in the arteries. Risk factors of atherosclerosis are smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and older age. Lifestyle changes toward a healthier routine can greatly decrease your risk of developing atherosclerosis.

Peripheral Arterial Disease can be diagnosed by a physician through a procedure called Ankle-brachial index (ABI). This painless test compares the blood flow in your leg to the blood flow in your arm. If the results return with an abnormal comparison, then your doctor may recommend a few other tests to check for PAD. Those tests may include Ultrasound imaging, and Computed Tomographic Angiography, a Magnetic Resonance Angiography, or and Angiography. Your doctor will advise you on which would be best in your situation.

If PAD is left untreated, it can lead to gangrene or even amputation of the extremity due to the lack of oxygen-rich blood. Those with PAD can experience a heart attack, stroke, and blood clots. Some of the severe symptoms of PAD are:

  • Gangrene
  • Leg pain that does not stop when you stop exercising
  • Wounds on the foot that take a while to heal
  • A noticeable decrease in the temperature of the affected limb compared to the other limb.

If you notice any of these symptoms or if you feel that you are at risk for PAD, please contact a physician. The cardiologists here at Tampa Cardiovascular Associates are experts in the field of PAD and its testing.
