We hear so much about the dangers of high blood pressure and hypertension, but what about low blood pressure readings? What do they indicate and is low blood pressure dangerous?

There is no specific number reading at which a decision of “too low” is indicated. Unless symptoms are present and bothersome, low blood pressure isn’t anything to worry about.

If symptoms are present a doctors visit is warranted. Let’s take a look at what can happen in the wake of a chronically low blood pressure reading. Normal blood pressure is considered to be 120/80. Anything below that could be considered in the low range.

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheaded feelings
  • Fainting
  • Thirst
  • Dehydration
  • Inability to focus
  • Vision disturbances
  • Clammy hands
  • Shallow breathing
  • Exhaustion
  • Depression

What causes low blood pressure?

Pinpointing the cause isn’t always so easy. There are a number of things which can cause blood pressure to drop. They include:

  • Heart issues
  • Endocrine system disruptions
  • Infections
  • Allergic reactions
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Loss of blood
  • Pregnancy
  • Extended bed rest

One single low reading is no cause for panic or concern, everyone’s blood pressure can vary a great deal. When you notice, over time, that readings continue to be abnormally low for what your body generally has been in the past, then it is time to visit your doctor and mention this as an issue that you would like to address.
