Cardiac Monitoring

Up until now if you experienced any condition that warranted the need for a heart monitor to be worn so that your doctor could track your heart rhythm and rate you were subjected to lots of wires and attached boxes that had to be carted around.

Thanks to the advent of these new ICM’s (Implantable Cardiac Monitors) patients can be monitored long-term for electrical activity and possible arrhythmias with only a smaller than thumb dive size monitor that can be implanted in the chest under the skin right during an office visit using a local anaesthetic.

In fact, it is even compatible with your smartphone via a special app. Abbott’s Confirm RX ICM allows the monitoring of patients remotely with just a blue tooth connection to a mobile phone and the MyMerlin mobile app. It was cleared by the FDA in 2017.

This small insertable cardiac monitor has helped to advance how doctors are able to remotely monitor patients. Once implanted just under the skin during a quick outpatient procedure, the Confirm Rx continuously monitors the heart in order to detect any irregularities.

Data is collected by the device and transmitted securely via the mobile app on a regular schedule set by the physician. Patients can even record events or symptoms right on their smartphone for the medical staff to review.

The implant is very discreet and unless pointed out most people would never notice it. It allows the patient to live their life without constantly thinking about their monitor, which in itself can make anxiety skyrocket and the heart work harder. This development is thanks to St. Jude medical and more information on it can be found by going to www.abbott.com.
