If you are suffering from varicose veins, you may be dealing with legs that ache and slow you down hampering your ability to do your job and possibly even socialize. Many put off treatment because they believe it to be too expensive or that their case may be too severe to fix.

The truth is that most procedures are covered by insurance and the longer you wait, the more progressive vein disease becomes – so it is by far better to catch it early. However, no matter what stage you are at Tampa Cardiovascular Associates Vein Clinic can help.

The physicians at Tampa Cardio are Vein Experts. They will review your medical history as well as your current state and any symptoms you are having. A treatment plan will then be custom created for you to direct you on the best path forward toward healthier legs.

If it has been determined that thermal ablation (heat) will not work for venous closure for a patient, endogenous chemoablation is a consideration as an option.

Endovenous chemoablation sometimes referred to as ECA, is performed on an outpatient basis. No sedation is required for this procedure. During the visit a chemical solution is injected directly into the damaged veins in order to produce endothelial destruction which is followed by the formation of fibrotic cords and eventually reabsorbed into the surrounding tissues. The osmotic agent Hypertonic Saline has been used for several decades to treat smaller varicose veins and spider veins. It is now being used to treat larger veins as well.

ECA is often the only option for patients who have formerly undergone vein stripping and still have areas where the vein is too gnarled and twisted to use heat ablation. ECA is best utilized for veins that are inaccessible by laser or radiofrequency ablation.

The beauty of using chemoablation is that foam sclerosants allow for a visual working image allowing the doctor to guide its course easily with ultrasound guidance.

The Results – What to Expect

Treated veins will begin to fade within a few weeks although it may take a few months to see final results. Chemoablation can also improve secondary symptoms including aching, burning, cramping, and swelling.

Post Chemoablation Recommendations

It is beneficial to maintain a healthy weight and to exercise regularly. Movement during the day rather than long periods of sitting or standing still can help promote ongoing vein health as well.
